In
the martial arts there is a word, budo, which means the martial way. In
fitness there is a word, Nia, which means the body's way.
Debbie
Rosas and Carlos Rosas created Nia in 1983 as a personal and
professional quest that grew out of their desire to discover a more
pleasurable and expressive way to get fit. Their fascination with the
body, the mind, the emotions, and the spirit, as well as a deep
curiosity for exploring human potential took them on a quest that
created Nia, a movement and personal growth practice that integrates
the very best of eastern, western and scientific methods from the
martial arts, dance arts, and healing arts.
Nia Co-founder, Debbie Rosas says, "At
the height of the Jane Fonda era, when aerobics meant high-impact and
bouncing, we had an idea and vision. We knew fitness could feel better
and be experienced in a more holistic and effective way. We said, Love
is the way to create a healthy body; Choose pleasure over pain; Take
off your shoes, feel your body, express yourself and make conscious
choices that support healing, transformation, health, well being, and
personal growth. Fall in love with your body. Become conscious of what
you do as a way to heal and enjoy life."
Before
the term "cross-training" was even invented, Nia was teaching people
how to use movement and energy variety to get fit and avoid injury.
Thousands of people from all over the world give praise and validation
to the power of Nia as a fitness and personal growth program.
In
Swahili, "Nia" means "with purpose," which is exactly the way we teach
you to move. We say, it’s a lot like chocolate, you have to taste it.
